A rigorous journey into phenomenography: from a naturalistic inquirer standpoint

The journey into phenomenography began with three central questions about which I was curious: How do active researchers perceive of research? How does phenomenography really work? and Where does this approach to research fit, given my own research history or baggage? This chapter addresses the first question somewhat, but concentrates mostly on the latter two by retracing the phenomenographic journey involved in a three-year project focusing on researchers’ conceptions of what counts as successful research. The journey is retraced through the exploration of similarities to, and differences from, previous ways of researching and, in this way, sheds light on the latter questions.
