Despite the lack of significant entrepreneurial orientation of franchisees, an approach is suggested that goes beyond the current state of thought. The paper, the first of its kind in examining entrepreneurial orientation across two countries in a franchise system, identifies the importance of promoting multi-unit franchising to facilitate growth. Despite the entrepreneurial orientation of franchise owners not being disputed, the role of the franchisee in the system lends itself to the enhancement of entrepreneurial activities. Similar initiatives may also be accommodated in a small to medium enterprise setting.
