This paper aims to contribute to the growing literature about open innovation. It takes an institutional approach, in order to explain the emergence and diffusion of open innovation logics in the computer and the biotechnologies industries. Based on two longitudinal studies, it depicts innovation logics and business models as the product of interactions between actors constrained by institutional frameworks, be it at the individual level, at the organization level, or across these levels. It also illustrates that innovation logics are co-contructed with technological change and the evolution of intellectual property frameworks.
