In this research we plan to examine the role that Knowledge Management has in development of sustainable organisations. Further more, we propose to examine whether there are any key factors in the use of Knowledge Management and sustainable development that could be used to provide a measure on the impact Knowledge Management has in achieving sustainability. The research project is an exploratory study using a case study approach. This method has been chosen due to the limited amount of literature available on the use of Information Technology and particularly Knowledge Management in sustainable development. By undertaking a case study approach, there is the flexibility to examine what is actually happening and adjust the developing theories according to the research rather than attempting to prove predefined theories. The significance of this study is the opportunity to see how much impact Knowledge Management can make in the process of reengineering an organisation along sustainable goals. It also contributes to the body of knowledge being put forward on the role of IT in sustainable development.
