Country matters: a working solution

Around 70 Afghan refugees are employed at the Burrangong meatworks in Young, New South Wales (NSW). This article discusses the reactions of the townspeople to the refugee workers, and the uncertain outlook for the men who are on three year temporary protection visas (TPVs). The Afghans have received strong support from the town and their employer is lobbying the Government to allow the men to stay on after their TPVs expire. However there have been incidents of racism and vilification from some residents and groups such as the right wing Australia First party. Without stronger political support for the Afghan refugees, the outlook for their future is not optimistic.
