The 11th of September was already branded firmly as a date of global significance for the people of Melbourne, Australia, when American Airlines Flight 11 ploughed into the north tower of New York's World Trade Centre. A year earlier, 'S11' had been the name given to the huge protests organized around the meeting of the World Economic Forum at Melbourne's Crown Casino. The Melbourne S11 protests followed similar action which disrupted the third ministerial conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Seattle in late 1999.
