In the light of psychoanalysis, writing may be understood as a doubling of the absent. Starting from this premise, and grounding it in personal experience, my paper explores the fundamental nature of translation. Dominique Hecq argues that the process of ethical translation has an ontological dimension that involves a twofold doubling, or double ghosting. The act of translating indeed entails both a reading and a writing, and therefore a ghosting of the voice at first and second removes.
