Two Swinburne researchers have developed resources and training for students to optimise their wellbeing during the stress and turmoil of the COVID-19 pandemic to better focus on their studies. Associate Professor Monica Thielking and Dr Kristina Turner conduct research on ways to improve wellbeing in education settings using positive psychology strategies. They realised that their research could also be used to support student wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic. They have developed five ‘wellbeing tip sheets’ based on the PERMA wellbeing framework of human flourishing to support student wellbeing. The Positive Psychology PERMA wellbeing framework shows us that wellbeing includes the elements of positive emotion, engagement, positive relationships, meaning and accomplishment. When all five of these elements are addressed, optimal human wellbeing, or flourishing, occurs, even during stressful times like COVID-19.
