Transcript of panel discussion: The comic book film adaptation: exploring modern hollywood's leading genre

A panel of industry experts will unmask the golden age of comic book filmmaking. Since the success of X-Men in the summer of 2000, filmgoers and comic fans have enjoyed an unprecedented number of comic book film adaptations. Drawing on the first book-length study of this frenzied period of production, The Comic Book Film Adaptation: Exploring Modern Hollywood's Leading Genre by Liam Burke (Swinburne University of Technology), this panel uncovers why, after more than a century of coexistence, comics and cinema have recently become so entwined. After considering the cause, the panel will then examine the effect of this trend. Topics will include how the language of comics has influenced the aesthetics of mainstream cinema, and the ways in which comic book fans, empowered by the web, facilitated the emergence of more faithful adaptations. Panel participants include Eisner Award-winning creator Mark Waid (Kingdom Come), Marvel Comics senior vice president of publishing Tom Brevoort, executive producer of the modern Batman films Michael Uslan (Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice), and Man of Action's Joe Kelly (Ben 10, I Kill Giants), who adapted his own comics into an animated films. Chaired and presented by Liam Burke. (Transcript)
