It is postulated that the strategies of subsidiaries differ from those of non-subsidiaries because of unique environmental aspects associated with their operation in Australia. Some of the unique influences that can be anticipated are the constraints imposed by home offices, constraints imposed by Australian Government regulations on takeovers, and also historical differences which arise due to the original reasons for entry into the Australian market. This paper presents data obtained from a large survey of Australian manufacturers which supports the viewpoint that subsidiaries have significantly different strategies.
