As universities adjust to funding changes and to the emerging new technologies of Industry 4.0, ASSH (Arts, Social Sciences & Humanities) disciplines are often relegated behind STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) disciplines as drivers for innovation. This paper from the School of Arts, Social Science & Humanities at Swinburne University of Technology argues that such an approach not only misses the importance of collaboration in driving innovation, but it also often betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the challenges in employment, technology, demography and geopolitics that all societies face. Hence it demonstrates the pivotal role ASSH disciplines will always play in developing human capital, valuing diversity, and transforming learning.
