Business analysis has emerged as an important IT competency in contemporary organisations. Business analysts are expected to liaise with stakeholders and technical IT staff to bridge the gaps between business and user requirements, technical design, and the implemented information system. However, failures and disappointments with working information systems continue to be a major concern for organisations and the community. To improve information systems outcome, this research investigated the practices of business analysts and highlighted challenges that BAs may need to overcome to effectively bridge the requirements-design gap. The research resulted in a new theory of business analysis practice and proposed ways in which the business analysis body-of-knowledge could be further developed to account for practical realities.
