Run-down areas in Iranian large cities such as Mashhad, the second large city in Iran, need urgent attention to solve their multi-dimensional problems. The usual large-scale urban intervention in Mashhad exhibits several shortcomings and lacks any innovative approach towards varied dimensions of sustainability, also fails to engage different stakeholders. This contrasts with the taken approach in Australian large cities. This thesis focuses on sustainable neighbourhood regeneration in Melbourne and Mashhad with a communicative and incremental approach. This research demonstrates how the chosen approach will achieve a greater sustainability for future regeneration projects in my cases and other cities.
