Individuals who are newly visually impaired should undergo an orientation and mobility training to help them learn essential safe travel. Orientation refers to the ability to place objects via spatial cognition in an environment and being aware of one’s location and its association with the environments. Part of this sensory training encompasses the strengthening of the mental mapping skills. Mental mapping helps a person to determine their current location and their intended destination with relation to other objects in their current environmental space. This research uses a computer-based assessment tool to evaluate the mental mapping skills of the participants.
