This thesis proposes a practical alternative for the existing unsaturated soil models; known to be complex and non-user-friendly. This is achieved by developing a less complicated framework for investigating the settlement of unsaturated layers of pavements or embankment fills under loadings or changes in moisture conditions. An application of the model proposed in this thesis could be the prediction of the deformation of a pavement or an embankment layer compacted under the pressure of roller and supporting load of overlying layers and traffic, when it gets inundated due to flooding or post flood drying.
