A novel framework for designing with vulnerable people and sensitive topics: Reflecting on a participatory design case study in the Australian adolescent oncofertility setting

There is a significant knowledge gap concerning vulnerable people in design research for products and services that feature sensitive topics, potentially resulting in significant unmet needs for this population. This thesis explores designing with vulnerable people and sensitive topics, through an in-depth examination of a case study in the Australian adolescent oncofertility setting. The findings suggest that understanding the intersection of vulnerability and sensitive topics is paramount to setting the appropriate scope, focus and structure for a design project. The proposed novel framework can guide for participatory designers, align multidisciplinary teams, and explore how complex social issues intersect.
