Schizophrenia spectrum disorder is a debilitating and lifelong psychiatric illness. Cognitive dysfunction is commonly considered a hallmark feature that is said to be experienced by all with the disorder. This body of research examined the considerable variability in cognitive impairment experienced by those with schizophrenia spectrum disorder and one of the potential underlying causes, the muscarinic system. Through a more in-depth understanding of the extent of cognitive impairment and the underlying causes, better treatments can be developed to improve the quality of life of those living with schizophrenia spectrum disorder.
