An invisible white wall: the career journeys of skilled immigrant women in an Anglo dominant society

This dissertation investigates the career journeys of skilled immigrant women from the UK, India, China and the Philippines in Australia, providing empirical data about skilled immigrant women’s careers. The research reveals how racism and White privilege affect immigrant women’s access to the labour market and their career advancement. By marking and de-neutralising the racialised nature of Australian working spaces, this study illustrates how Whiteness shapes immigrant women’s careers and confers privilege upon the White British group. This thesis also shows how all the skilled immigrant women are affected by patriarchal power relations which serve to hinder their career progression.
