The current monitoring method adopts scheduled manual inspection which is labour-extensive and ineffective as catastrophic failures may occur in between the inspection. The research focusses on the application of distributed optical fibre sensor to provide efficient, reliable, and cost-effective monitoring technology for mining conveyor. This technology allows real-time monitoring of the conveyor and is able to detect anomaly within the conveyor components based on their vibration characteristics. The technology also highly economical where it only consists of one/two optical fibre cables and a computer system to monitor more than tens of km long conveyor.
