Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) refers to changes in corrosion caused by the presence of microorganisms, typically as a result of their metabolic activities. While MIC causes major problems of rapid corrosion in a range of industries, the fundamental mechanisms involved are poorly understood. Many of the areas in which MIC is a problem occur in systems with moving fluids, such as piping systems. Despite this, most of the research on MIC is typically performed in static conditions. The overall aim of this research is to better understand the effects of fluid flow on MIC.
