Kipali roundabout (now called Kipali interchange), located near Kuching downtown, was severely congested during peak hours. Because of this, the Sarawak State Government decided to build shallow underpasses at this intersection. The research included in this thesis is one of the first documented and quantified studies of roundabouts with shallow underpasses in the City of Kuching, Sarawak. This research will certainly contribute to the deeper understanding of the traffic characteristics and impacts of a roundabout with shallow underpasses on its neighbouring junctions. With proper understanding, it is possible to apply this potentially cost-efficient solution to other intersections in the future.
