This thesis investigates external voting for Brazil, which is a process that permits voting rights for Brazilians living abroad in their homeland elections. This empirical study proposes to identify what external voting rights represent to the Brazilian emigrant community. It analyses transnational relationships and political connections of emigrants that are reflected by their voting rights in Brazil, seeking to identify the drivers of Brazilian voting abroad. External voting is a consequence of global migration and political transnationalism, and has been adopted by more than 150 countries in the world.
