Fingerprints are the most common biometric modality used for both security and forensic applications, such as door access systems, immigration clearance systems, and crime scene investigations. This doctoral work embarks on a decade-old concept of enhancing the security of biometric systems as well as protecting the users' privacy, namely the cancellable fingerprint. It aims at developing a state-of-the-art biometric system that offers not only high recognition accuracy but also strong security. The proposed work has successfully improved the security of the conventional biometric systems by trading off the computational efficiency, which can be easily complemented with today's high-speed computer technology.
