Stage of illness is a novel construct within bipolar disorders research, with intuitive appeal in its potential to improve treatment, which is commonly inadequate. This project involved five studies which shed light on the role stage of illness has in individuals' treatment, in particular psychological interventions. This project adds incrementally to the underdeveloped understanding of how stage of illness influences the outcomes of psychosocial treatments for bipolar disorders, and provides core directions for future research such as improved conceptualisation, measurement and operationalisation. Further, this project offers important clinical implications, such as more nuanced treatment in the vein of precision psychiatry.
