Traffic engineering and smart road management are critical components of any modern city. Through simulations run on supercomputers, traffic engineers are able to study, plan and control road traffic in real-time. The major drawback associated with supercomputer technology is cost, availability and scalability. This thesis proposes a solution to these drawbacks by utilising cloud computing technology as a supercomputer replacement. The cloud is cost effective, highly available and scalable. As cloud was not designed for the purpose of high-powered computing, the research proposes software architecture that enhances the high-throughput capabilities of cloud to allow the running of large-scale real-time simulations.
