This thesis investigates the use of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns as a viable solution for critical bridges prone to strong multi-directional seismic actions. Hybrid simulation is used as an advanced experimental technique to investigate the seismic performance of the columns under highly complex boundary forces. The experimental results are used to conduct a performance based probabilistic assessment to quantify the seismic losses of bridges with different column options. The results provide significant insight to engineers to make risk-informed and value-engineered decisions in the construction of new seismic-resilient bridges or the retrofitting of existing reinforced concrete (RC) bridges.
