Comparative Analysis of Nutritional Composition and Germination Properties Between Hard and Soft Seed Coat Adlay (Coix lacryma-jobi L.)
This thesis deals with a neglected plant with enormous potential as a future crop known as adlay. Consumed adlay has a softer seed coat (C. lacryma-jobi var. ma-yuen), while the wild cultivar has a hard seed coat (C. lacryma-jobi var. lacryma-jobi). These different morphological and taxonomical differences imply that nutritional and germination differences might present and need to be understood to fully harness the plant's future benefits. This thesis implies various methods to determine the adlay nutritional quality and safety regarding heavy metal accumulation as well as pre-sowing treatment with mechanical scarification and seed priming to enhance its germination. This thesis provides valuable knowledge on adlay to address food security and sustainability in Indonesia and other tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and the Pacific.
