Constructing our futures anew: For greater intensity of becoming

This thesis examines futurists’ capacity to engage with the future. A literature review contends that by separating their work into opposing domains futurists do not recognise important aspects of their expertise. Empirical data identifies two ways of engaging with the future. The first involves a reflection process of unfolding and revealing the future along a time framework. The second involves turning to the conditions to co-create an unknown emerging future. Futurists’ capacity to engage with the future is similar to but extends beyond that of laboratory scientists. Futures studies education may contribute to extending capacity to engage with the future.
