Crossing Cultural Communication Borders: Extralinguistic Culture-bound Reference Subtitle Translation from Chinese to English

Subtitle translation for film and television goes beyond simply translating a foreign language. Source language audiences and target language audiences have different cultural contexts that need to be captured in the translation. This thesis utilizes Jan Pedersen's model of Extralinguistic Culture-bound References (ECRs) to analyse the translations of different genres of film and television from Chinese to English. It presents implications and guidelines for best practice translation of culture-bound references.
