Several subjective pavement surface condition rating systems are used by highway departments as an expedient tool to determine the potential need for periodic resurfacing maintenance work. This visual rating is prone to be biased, causes traffic disruptions, and is risky for the assessors required to carry it out. Therefore, in the current study, a set of relationships are developed to relate subjective ratings to objective/directly measured pavement condition data, in the hope that the need for visual pavement surface rating in triggering resurfacing program, at the network level, may be reduced or removed.
