In this thesis, the authors developed a novel approach to solubilise membrane proteins from cell membranes using a system for direct targeting of modified membrane scaffold proteins to recombinant tagged neurotransmitter receptors expressed in human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293). The authors also investigated the electrophysiology of HEK293 cells expressing these neurotransmitter receptors. The research might potentially contribute toward structural studies of membrane proteins and support further understanding of neurotransmitter receptors. This would assist and support research for drug discovery, related to membrane proteins.
