This PhD dissertation presents the development of a microscopic agent-based simulation approach to investigate the performance of Autonomous Mobility on Demand (AMoD) systems in the context of a case study in Melbourne, Australia. Findings of this research show that the benefits of AMoD systems have mainly been overestimated. The current study has also discovered a strong quadratic relationship between AMoD fleet size and vehicle kilometers travelled.
