Each year, almost 50,000 divorces are finalised in Australia with thousands of other long-term relationships also ending in separation. Although both men and women undergoing divorce can experience severe distress, women are more likely to seek and receive help from others. In contrast, the unique experience and emotional trauma felt by men is often unrecognised and unsupported, sometimes with tragic consequences. This study provided an important insight into both the general factors associated with male adaptation to divorce and the individual experiences of divorced Australian men. Results will be used to help Australian men more positively adapt to post-divorce life and parenting.
