This study explores an evolving collaboration network of inventors in the context of an emerging technology, focussing on the factors that drive collaboration along the technology lifecycle. Using patent data and a model for network evolution, the results show a different effect of geographic and social proximity on the creation of collaboration ties across locations, while organisational proximity matters equally across space and time. The nature of local institutions partly explains these differences. These insights enhance knowledge since prior studies lack explanations for conflicting empirical findings, plus they inform decision-makers who seek to influence the collaboration behaviour of inventors.
