Investigates the effects of an early resistance training program following major heart surgery and finds that this mode of exercise is safe, feasible and significantly improved cognitive recovery. The findings of this thesis inform an active participatory model of rehabilitation that engages patients in their accelerated recovery rather than the traditional approach that focuses on restrictions to arm exercise and activity in the form of sternal precautions delaying a return to optimal functional performance.
