Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) has the potential to improve road traffic safety and to significantly reduce accidents by enabling a broadcasting of critical safety information. However, the highly mobile and dynamic vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) network poses many challenges for a reliable and efficient communication channel. As such, performance evaluation of DSRC communication for the use of safety applications is essential before such applications are deployed. In this thesis, we evaluate and improve the performance of the standard IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) protocol for safety applications in a single hop broadcast DSRC-based network.
