Overcoming the energy crisis is one of our world's greatest obstacles by considering the scarcity of energy sources in use. Solar energy (Silicon as a component) through the use of solar panels is one of the most promising solutions. Boron is one of the most detrimental impurities in metallurgical grade silicon and need to be removed to produce solar grade silicon. Boron removal from molten silicon using slag has been studied in this thesis. It is comprised of a combination of thermodynamic and kinetic modelling to determine the distribution coefficient and rate of reaction of boron with and without applied potential for selected slag systems.
