Engaging citizens with climate change involves a difficult balance between appealing to people's existing values, while also addressing climate change's systemic causes. The unconventional gas (UCG) industry sparked widespread citizen engagement and a grassroots campaign that achieved a ban on UCG extraction for Victoria. Data is analysed from news discourse, participant observation, and interviews with movement organisers. The campaign appealed to people's common values such as honesty, fairness, farmer custodianship, and clean air, water and soil - but deliberately avoided a climate narrative to sustain citizen engagement. The thesis asks, can this movement show how to engage citizens with climate change?
