The study is a pioneering attempt to explore multi-level factors that influence the performance of industry engagements by academicians in private universities in Malaysia. Using multiple regression modelling, the study found significant, but varying relations between academic proactiveness, readiness to collaborate, universities' learning orientation, strong collaborative purpose, strong collaborative environment, performance variable enhanced reputations and resources, and performance variable effective knowledge transfer with academics' involvement in teaching, research and company-creation related collaborations. The study findings have practical and theoretical implications for policy makers from government agencies, industry and universities to design more effective policies and management practices by proposing a set of guidelines that universities should follow to optimise collaboration outcomes.
