This PhD reconceptualised the definition of disordered eating for current and former athletes as a state that can proceed or precede a clinical eating disorder that is cognitively and/or behaviourally mediated and is contextual to an individual’s sociocultural positioning. This reconceptualisation and critique of the culture of disordered eating contributed to the development of a world first disordered eating scale. The Athletic Disordered Eating (ADE) Scale has important clinical and research implications for the prevention and assessment of disordered eating in athletic populations.
