Understanding and controlling cell-material interactions is of utmost importance to numerous biomedical applications. It is well known that surface chemistry and topography influence protein adsorption and cellular response. In the present work these surface properties were controlled through colloidal self-assembly in combination with chemical surface modification. Through this approach the influence of surface chemistry and topography on the cellular response can be studied combined and individually. This provides a valuable platform for the development of new in vivo and in vitro biomedical devices.
