Hoarding disorder is a disabling condition experienced within the population. It is characterized by the accumulation, and/or excessive acquisition of belongings and a difficulty discarding these possessions. Treatment for hoarding has focused on cognitive behavior therapy, in addition to pharmacological interventions and bibliotherapy. Our overall findings highlight various strengths and weaknesses. Although treatment outcome studies appear to have high efficacy, there are a range of limitations including a majority of participants remaining symptomatic post-treatment, and questions around the sustainability of treatment effects. Additional research may enable the potential for innovation and advancement of our existing treatment structures.
