This thesis examines the performance of Applications that react to long-term latency between two Internet nodes based on historical measurement of the actual latency between a subset of nodes. The thesis demonstrates that by using a Network Coordinate System, such as the Vivaldi algorithm, Applications can optimise performance and resource allocation by having a priori latency information for all the nodes in the network. Additionally, the thesis demonstrates that it is possible to create a more stable and secure environment for the Application by monitoring and detecting anomalies that indicate an attempt to disrupt this process.
