The economic dispatch of electrical energy to the consumer using large-scale thermal generating units is one of the fundamental issues in operation and management of large power systems. In this study, two novel optimization techniques have been proposed, are orthogonal particle swarm optimization and multi-gradient particle swarm optimization algorithms. Developing new techniques such as these techniques for solving the economic dispatch issue is necessary with the rapid technological evolution in smart power grids. Thus, the power systems have become more cost-effective, stable and reliable. This study will help the electrical engineers to manage and govern electrical energy to the consumer.`
