This research studies the behavior of impact resistant and panel bonding epoxy adhesive joints when subjected to various types of loading configurations. Several mechanical tests and computer simulations were conducted to characterize and study the behavior of the adhesives used. The research found that the adherend (material being bonded) absorbs the large portion of the impact compared to the adhesive. These results can help manufacturers and repairers in the automotive industry to make better informed choices about what kinds of adhesives and adherends should be used in structural applications.
