This study investigates the roles of typicality and novelty in determining the aesthetic preference of industrial products. Based on the theories of Berlyne (1971) on novelty and Rosch's Categorization theory (1978) that highly influenced the exploration of typicality, different categories of industrial products that varied in the degree of functionality and decorativeness were tested to see how their aesthetic preference tolerate with typicality and novelty. It is intended that by identifying the elements that could influence and impact users’ perceptions and preference, industrial product's marketability value could be increased and the risks related to production could be minimized.
