The project was pivoted around the design, characterization, and fabrication of nanostructured nature inspired surfaces with respect to bacterial cell-surface interactions at the nanoscale. The finding that the insect wings natural surfaces such as those of cicada, dragon fly and damsel fly and their synthetic analogues such as black silicon are bactericidal against different microorganisms including pathogenic cells, will assist in design of new generation of antibacterial surfaces that are able to resist biofilm formation and will serve as inspiration for the large-scale manufacture of biomaterials in industrial and biomedical applications.
