This project draws together a book about knitting in Australia with a scholarly framework. Disruptive knitting: how knitters are changing the world, based on 87 interviews, examines knitting’s relevance to social issues such as gender, women’s role and social inequality. It analyses how knitting reflects the wider Australian society and influences it. The exegesis uses Feminist Standpoint Theory to illuminate the gendered practice of knitting, now being used by women to make statements about their place in the world and to influence society and by men to reject such gender stereotyping. The project casts new light on a neglected topic.
