This thesis explores historic and contemporary conceptions of Fijian nationhood in order to evaluate recent nation-building attempts. It does this by examining the dissemination of competing nationhood discourses throughout Fijian history in order to compare these against contemporary developments. This thesis provides a theoretical framework alongside quantitative data from which to judge Fiji's efforts at resolving historic ethnic conflict. In doing so it shines light on theoretical and practical arguments surrounding the resolution of ethnic
conflict within society.
