In this thesis, I conducted a survey with the upgraded Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Radio Telescope to search for intense millisecond duration bursts of radio emission (known as Fast Radio Bursts or FRBs). It included the development of a new automated telescope control and scheduling software, and rigorous vetting the performance of the existing search pipeline. The survey yielded 7 new FRBs, which I have used to explore the origin of the bursts, the nature of the underlying population of their progenitors, and estimated the properties of the ionised gas between galaxies through which the radiation has propagated.
